BK introduced a 'limited edition' bun to Sri Lanka — finally! Titled the Angriest Whopper, the meal's brief suggests that it packs enough heat to make even the most spice-lovin' Sri Lankan cry. Their FB page describes the bun thus: "The burger is made of red bun with hot chilli baked into the bun, Mayo, Spicy angry sauce, Iceberg lettuce, Tomatoes, Angry Onion Petals, Cheese, Beef/ Chicken Patty & Jalapenos."
That's a lot of angry going on in there, btw.
Now, to our breakdown.
The Whopper
Prices start at Rs. 600 (for a chicken patty, with beef being 650), with meals going up to around a thousand bucks. We ordered one (with cheese, which was an add-on so cost a bit more which is weird because the poster says it comes with cheese in the first place) for take-away, and was surprised to see that the bun is as incredibly bright red as it was on their promo poster. Wow.
The first thing that we noticed was the smell. A synthetic aura (if smells could have an aura) emanated from it. I thought it smelled rather plastic-y, Kinita mentioned it was the dye, and Chandana pinned it down to the smell of strong old pol-thel: but the smell is slight, and though it's rather unappealing it isn't overpowering and disappears after a while.
We found the colour intensely fascinating because… just, how. The pictures aren't exaggerating the shade, btw. Tearing off bits of the bun for science, we discovered that the dough had a rather red-velvet cakey texture and look to it and barely packed any heat at all, so we're not sure how the hot chilli was 'baked into the bun.'
The stuff inside was quite generous and filling, and we loved the jalapenos which added a great acidic kick to it. The 'angry sauce' and 'angry onion petals' didn't make a noticable difference but that's because the chilli that's already in it was basically dominating the whole thing. All in all, it was mostly a marginally spicier version of your regular Whopper, except for the glaring red bun and pickled jalapenos (the latter of which we totally approve of).
