Jade is a Chinese restaurant in Nugegoda that offers an affordable alternative to the staples, Flower Drum or Chinese Dragon.
I like Jade. I hadn’t heard of it until recently, but they serve pretty good Chinese at affordable prices. Large devilled chicken (Rs. 900), hot butter cuttlefish (Rs. 850), beef with kankun (Rs. 680) – all large portions. And very tasty. We’ve recently been quite disappointed with Steamboat, Flower Drum and the usuals, so we were sticking to the mainland side of the city’s restaurants for a while. Sri Lankan Chinese, it appeared, was caught in a bit of a rut; the flavours were being overdone, the thick sauces had descended into gloopyness and the champion dish, the hot butter cuttlefish, was too often inconsistent.
Jade, while not revolutionising anything, is a good return to the comfort of well made Lankan Chinese. You get a good kick of MSG, the chilli paste is great and the portions are affordable. Basically, satisfying take away with easy access if you’re in Dehiwala/Nugegoda/Wellwatte… Worth a try for standard local Chinese done well.
