What a vibrant new place to stop for a bite on the way out of Colombo… Cafe J is the newest eatery to hit the rapidly livening Negombo strip. Belonging to the Jetwing Group, this juice bar/patisserie/cafe is bright, clean and stylish, opening out onto the road on one side and the ocean on the other. And just as Jetwing Hotels are popular for their quality of food, Café J didn’t disappoint either.
Upon arrival, we were hit by the smell of freshly baked bread, so we asked for a breakfast menu and ordered a Croissant (Rs. 200), a Danish pastry (Rs. 200) and one English muffin along with a pot of tea and a glass of papaya juice for Rs. 600. Slightly more expensive than a normal breakfast you’d have on the side of the road, yes, but the place is beautiful and well designed.
The baked goods are cooked in their own bakeries so they’re fresh and soft – and of generally good quality. They also serve a selection of cold soups (Rs. 350), crepes (Rs 750), sandwiches (Rs 550) and salads (Rs 650). You can also order a plate of fresh lagoon prawns and a salad for Rs. 3,000 upwards.
