The Devon Bakeaway is a pretty decent place to get some short eats or drop in for lunch.
The Devon Bakeaway is on your left hand side just before the Nugegoda flyover (Past Mc Donald’s). The location is ideal, although finding a parking spot can be extremely difficult in this part of town. They mainly do short eats and cakes but their lunchtime menu of biriyani, fried rice and the essential rice and curry bring in a handful of loyal customers.
The restaurant is clean, well maintained and there is also a nice place to sit and eat; a few tables and chairs looking out on to the hectic roads of Nugegoda. I tried my best to take some pictures of the place while waiting for my food but was rudely told not to take any. I still managed to take a few, although the quality might have been a bit compromised (sorry).
The service, on the other hand, wasn’t the best. It’s one of those places where you are asked to order at one counter, pay at another, and well, it’s pretty confusing not to mention annoying. The management should find a way to sort out this mess (instructions above the counter perhaps?).
More importantly, however, the food was good – although Rs. 175 for a chicken rice and curry may be considered a tad expensive. On a heap of rice lay a succulent and flavorful piece of chicken, dhal, a kos sambol, sweet potato and green beans infused with bits of chili. And of course no rice and curry is quite complete without the papadam. All the curries were rather flavourful, although after all years of eating rice and curry, it all tastes about the same.
Having come all this way, I couldn’t leave without trying out their renowned short eats. After pacing the elongated showcase a few times, I settled on a bacon and egg pastry and a vegetable samosa. Both of them were relatively good. The bacon and egg pastry boasted a very delicate hint of bacon surrounded by a deliciously crispy pastry and the samosa was had a very floury and thick exterior, not the usual vegetable samosa you would find at Raheemas or Klassy.
All in all the Devon Bakeaway is a reliable stop for those casual cravings. YAMU gives the food a good 7/10.
