Laksala is one of Colombo’s high end tourist shops. The spacious 2 storey establishment is home to some beautiful paintings, wooden carvings, brass and silver sculptures, gems & jewellery and some beautiful handloom clothing. This is a really nice place to go look for a gift, or if you’re here on holiday – it is a wonderful place to find a souvenir.
Though you may find yourself wandering around for hours admiring the sparkle of shiny gems or the vibrant colours of the handloom, the place is quite expensive; the cheapest thing I saw in there was a small wooden elephant for about Rs. 240, and the most expensive – an intricate model of an old war ship priced at Rs. 1 million. Apart from a few key chains and decorated bowls, it’s quite difficult to find anything less than a thousand rupees.
Overall it is a lovely boutique and if you’ve never been to Laksala before, then you should definitely drop by and see what our skilful Sri Lankan handicraftsman have been up to. It’s a nice place to get lost and if you don’t mind spending a bit of money on something decorative, this may turn out to be your next favourite shopping destination.
