Coffee Stop at the Cinnamon Grand serves high quality short-eats, sandwiches, cakes and confectionary. It’s open til 2 AM every day.
Coffee Stop is a posh version of the local short-eat joint located at the Cinnamon Grand. They sell cakes, confectionary, pastries, sandwiches (deli style fillings such as chicken mayo, salmon and dill, etc are on offer) crepes, coffee and ice cream. Coffees and cold drinks range from about Rs. 300 to 400 and pastries are generally about Rs. 100.
While Coffee Stop functions as a meeting/idling location (it’s situated in a hotel lobby), it’s also got pies and bagels that are well worth going out of your way for. At just Rs. 100 (nett!) each you get a selection of buttery, crusty pies filled with steak and mushroom, lamb and apple, devilled chicken, or even pork. The fillings are all excellent and have the wonderful virtue of being actually, well, filling. Compare to the pies at, say, Fab: Rs. 70 for the chicken and mushroom, Rs. 90 for the country chicken. The pies at Fab are good, but nowhere near as excellent as the ones from Coffee Stop. And they pretty much cost the same.
Also notable is Coffee Stop’s excellent salmon and cream cheese bagel (Rs. 450), which contains a thick layer of creamy cheese and a very generous filling of smoked salmon. Not sure where else you can find this deli staple in Colombo, except perhaps at DeliFrance.
We like Coffee Stop a lot. Compared to its local counterparts, you actually get much higher quality for not that much more rupee. Highly recommended for the pies alone.
