We’re sad to report that the Fork branch on Marine Drive has shut down. The branches in Ja-Ela and Ekala seem to be going strong, but apparently it didn’t work out in coastal Colombo.
Fork did some decent pizza and mediocre pasta in a location that could have used a bit of cleaning up. The staff was nice, they had decent design and they seemed to be paying attention. We remain a bit suspicious of any place that tries to do Italian food without pork (pepperoni, prosciutto, salami and mortadella – they’re all actually pork). The Sri Lankan market is such that you lose Muslim families, which is fine, that’s a market choice every business makes, but it also means to can’t really make Italian food. Our main issue with Fork was that we didn’t want chicken pizza all the time, even if they did interestingly break an egg in the middle.
But, honestly, that probably didn’t effect why the place closed. Colombo is far more competitive than Ja-Ela. On Marine Drive alone there’s Arabian Knights, Baghdad Knights, Redberry’s, etc.
Or maybe there’s a bunch of other reasons it didn’t work out. Either way, though we only went once, we’ll miss you Fork.
