Harpo’s Pizza does some pretty great pizzas using high quality ingredients. They’re not cheap, but the pizzas are authentic and you get more bang for your buck than most other places.
The Pizzas
When it comes to the menu, Harpo’s isn’t the most extensive but they’ve still got around 25 pizzas to choose from, which is not bad at all. While they may not have the largest selection, they’ve definitely got some of the most interesting combinations. They’ve got a great selection of meats like mutton, lamb and yes, they do serve pork based products, so everything from bacon, to salami, to parma ham is available. Many pizzerias nowadays don’t serve pork, in order to to maintain Halal standards, but you can’t really be authentic unless you do. When compared to others, Harpo’s is definitely more expensive but you could probably attribute that to the quality of ingredients. The 9′ pizzas range from Rs. 960 – Rs. 1460, with the 12′ pizzas costing roughly Rs. 500 more. They’ve also got a massive 19′ pizza option as well at Rs. 3250 upwards, which comes with 16 slices.
We got the pizza grecia (Rs. 1060), since we wanted to see how their lamb pizzas fare. It comes with rosemary coated lamb, black olives, mozzarella and feta cheese. This is the first lamb pizza we’ve had from any local pizzeria and it was delicious. The lamb was was well seasoned and soft, complemented by the subtle aroma and flavour of the rosemary. I’m not a fan of olives, but coupled with the feta cheese it adds a nice balance of saltiness to the pizza.
The pizza marinara (Rs. 1110) is their main seafood offering which comes with both prawns and calamari. This one was quite nice, if a bit mild when it comes to spice. This one is basically a simple seafood pizza with mozzarella, garlic and tomatoes, but the quality of the fresh seafood is what really shines through. Only thing I would personally have liked was a bit more spice, but that’s a personal preference, and they do send sachets of chilli flakes which you can add.
We also tried out the pizza romagna (Rs. 1060) which comes with bacon and smoked chicken. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, pizzas and bacon just work, add in smoked chicken and mushrooms to the mix and it becomes that much better.
This is kinda’ unrelated, but the night we got these delivered we were making waffles, so we decided to wrap a pizza slice in a waffle, and it worked brilliantly. So yeah, fluffy waffle + thin crust pizza = gold.
Delivery & Service
The delivery, in our case was prompt and came right on time. We had it delivered to Mt.Lavinia which is pretty far from Harpo’s, on a rainy day, so we’re impressed. Delivery is free within Colombo and Rs. 150 to suburbs, which is pretty reasonable. The gentleman who took our order was very polite and explained the different pizzas when we inquired. So all in all we were very satisfied with the service.
Conclusion
Harpo’s may be pricier than other pizzerias, but they justify that by delivering some great pizzas with high quality ingredients. For those of you looking for authentic pizzas with pork based products, Harpo’s is a very good bet.
