Ceylan Crêperie.

UPDATE: this place is no longer operating. We hope it comes back.

Yet another of the Good Market’s fabulous finds, the Ceylan Crêperie is a superb little stall that started up a couple of months ago. The French owner, Naomi, is effervescent and passionate about her product. With no gluten or dairy, the sweet pancakes are totally vegetarian, vegan, and yum. You can find them at the Good Market, either at Diyatha Uyana on Thursdays or Racecourse on Saturdays.

The first authentic French crêperie in Sri Lanka, the stall does a standard crêpe (either soft or crispy, depending on your preferences), with a variety of fillings and toppings. Of course the chocolate and fruit (banana or strawberry) toppings are the most popular and aesthetically pleasing, but there’s a lot more to it.

The fillings include the standard brown sugar/butter and sugar, sugar and lemon, honey, kithul syrup, chocolate, jam of the day, compote, and salted butter caramel. Everything is between Rs. 250 and Rs. 350, which strikes me as incredibly reasonable for the size and brilliant taste. They also add on some of Foody Goody’s natural ice cream on if you request it. On Naomi’s suggestion, I tried the salted butter caramel at Rs. 350. She also added a bit of applesauce to the mix, which was complemented the taste perfectly. Possibly one of the best crêpes I’ve ever had, hands down.

The crêpe was really thin, and made on a crêpe pan she actually brought all the way from France (which shows real dedication to the pancake cause if you ask me). All the sauces, jams and mixes are home made as well, which means that it’s all fairly good for you if not your waistline.

The Crêperie is hoping to expand into savouries soon, but will probably start slow with one new ingredient per week to make sure there’s no wastage and to see what catches on. They don’t cater or deliver yet (it’s just a one-woman operation), which is okay because we hope they keep their quality and charm.

We recommend you not eat for a couple of days, and then just gorge yourself every stall at the Good Market and end here for a sublime dessert.
