Uswetakeiyawa. Try saying that 5 times fast. I once heard it being referred to as UK, but I don’t know if that’s a thing yet. Nevertheless, UK’s a pretty cool area. Although it seems to have gone unnoticed, there are a handful of hotels with some private bungalows along the coastline. There’s also plenty of bare land, which I assume has already been purchased and is being held onto until tourism picks up in the area.
Uswetakeiyawa Beach is a somewhat isolated setting, having still not really made the rounds as a coastal hotspot per se. But that’s part of what makes it so great. There’s hardly any living being on the vast sandy expanse except for the towering coconut trees and the shrubs below it, so you practically have the beach to yourself. The gentle waves and few rocks make it pleasant for a swim and the view is fantastic too. Most of us are used to seeing Colombo facing north from Mount Lavinia, but you get an entirely different perspective from here. Facing south, you’ve got a great view looking back at city with the port and World Trade Center clearly visible. You can tell that the beach here doesn’t get much attention though. People have littered on the sand and it doesn’t look like there’s anyone maintaining it.
Regardless, this is a great beach if you’re looking for a secluded place to chill out and watch the sunset, etc. You can also bring your car right up to the sand at some points, so it makes for a great seaside picnic setting too.
