Last week, fancying a break from my usual rice and curry, I went in search of something a bit different on my lunch break from work. Having been highly recommended the biryani at New Majestic Hotel (on that row of restaurants opposite Majestic City), I thought this would be a good a place as any to start.
Although the restaurant itself was clean, the food was cheap and staff were friendly; sadly my vegetarian biryani was disappointing. Maybe it was because it had been hyped up beforehand, but I was expecting something outstanding and what I got was a fairly average dish. The flavours were uninteresting and, I may well be wrong, but the spices tasted powdered rather than fresh. The New Majestic offers other standard dishes as well (such as Fried Rice, Devilled Meat & Fish and Kotthu Roti); though my lunch companion had the rice and curry and was similarly unimpressed.
Variety being the spice of life and all that, I won’t be letting one bad experience put me off finding new places to go for lunch in Colombo 4, but I shan’t be heading over to the New Majestic again in a hurry either that’s for sure.
