Consider yourself a bona fide carnivore? Well then Backyard BBQ is just what you’re looking for. They’re a barbecue specialist in Mt. Lavinia that does delivery and take-out. They’ve got a great selection of western barbecue at a pretty good price.
The BBQ
Barbecue specialists are difficult to come by in Colombo, so we were pretty excited when we saw the Backyard BBQ menu. They’ve got everything from beef and pork rib racks, pizzas, pork chops, burgers and even some Vietnamese dishes. All things considered, they are actually quite affordable. We ordered Rs. 2000 worth of stuff and it was easily enough for 4-5 people.
We tried out their classic beef rack (Rs. 1000), which comes with coleslaw and mashed potatoes. This was one pretty big rack (ahem). The meat was cooked perfectly tender and came right off the bone. The sauce however, was just a bit too sweet for my taste buds, but that’s a personal preference. If sweet isn’t your thing they’ve got a bunch of other options for racks including hickory smoke, which I intend to try next time around.
Their fifty-fifty burger (Rs. 330) comes with beef, bacon, cheese and pineapple. This one was good but nothing extraordinary. The let down for me here was that the bacon was mixed in the patty, as oppose to having it as strips on top. Besides that, the patty was grilled well and tasted pretty good. This was the first time I’ve ever had a slice of pineapple in a burger, and I’m not generally a fan of fruits in savory dishes, but this actually worked really well, adding a nice texture and subtle sweetness that wasn’t overpowering.
We also tried out the pork chops (Rs. 600). Once again the meat was cooked well, and this time around the pepper sauce was the winner. The preparation was simple but the combination of a good sauce and perfect grill is all you need for a good pork chop.
Delivery and Service
When Backyard BBQ started off in 2012 they had a dine-in outlet in Mt. Lavinia junction, but has since moved out and now does delivery and take-out from their residence. We were told that they’re in the process of relocating, so we hope to see them at an accessible location sometime soon. We’d say stick to the delivery option since take-out can be a bit tedious. The good news is that their delivery is very efficient and in our case the food was at our door right on time.
Conclusion
Backyard BBQ is a welcomed addition to the expanding list of delivery options, but we’d also love to see them open up their new dine-in outlet. They do good barbecue at an affordable rate. What more can we ask for right?
