SocialService.lk is a charity founded a year ago and run by Shihan Haniff. He puts together several different outreach programs every week, gets a bunch of fun people to volunteer and then hangs out at various institutions for the underprivileged.
YAMU tagged along one day when they went visiting the Brohier Elders Home. It was one of the volunteer’s birthday and she had asked SocialServices to organise an event at an elders Home and that’s how they ended up with an evening of fun and entertainment for 16 old uncles. The evening wrapped up with dinner and cake and one of the uncles told me, it’s a breath of fresh air to have young people around.
SocialServices does that as well – If you want to provide an alms giving or celebrate your special day in a children’s or elders home, they will do that for you as well. SS runs completely on the funds given to them by friends and family of the charity. Shihan Haniff invites people to go shopping with him and its interesting how many people jump in to do something for a project.
At the Brohier Home, the uncles played a word game, drew and coloured, the volunteers spent quality gab time and then there was dinner.
Keep an eye on their Facebook page if you want to give or to volunteer in their projects. They have a FB page and for different projects. Within one year, they have completed over 20 projects, which includes visiting elders homes and orphanages to raising funds. If you know of homes that need some fun company and gifts and genuine people taking genuine interest in them, call SocialService.lk
