Sahan Agro is a new store where you can get fresh, organic fruits, vegetables and rice – as well as natural products like bee’s honey. Organic food – food unpolluted by chemicals and pesticides – is hard to find in Colombo. Besides Sahan Agro, there’s also
Good Market
and Saaraketha that caters to the health-conscious.
Location
Unlike Good Market or Saaraketha, the Sahan Agro store isn’t found in Colombo’s central posher parts. It’s inside a giant warehouse in the Economic Center (
Aarthika Madhyasthanaya
), in the interiors of Narahenpita. The location is basically a huge vegetable market. Sahan Agro however, is the only vegetable store in the warehouse that has
organic
produce.
The Stuff & Prices
The stuff here includes your basic vegetables and fruits, from pineapples to tomatoes. We were told on the phone that the price difference here, generally speaking, is about Rs. 50-80 more than ordinary supermarket produce.
They’ve got a variety of organic rice, but generally it costs Rs. 200 per KG. Pineapples and bananas are for about Rs. 100 per KG, and tomatoes for Rs. 500 per KG. The produce here is made exclusively on Sahan Agro organic farms, in Polannaruwa and Puttalam.
There are also delicious bottles of bee’s honey, kithul and hakuru available. You can get a 200g bottle of bee’s honey for Rs. 490.
Conclusion
Colombo is big on fast food chains, Chinese food and Indian food, and that’s not really helping where personal health is concerned. So we’re glad there are at least a few healthy options in the city, like Sahan Agro’s organic produce. You can also check out
