Family Baker is arguably the best mainstream bakery in Mount Lavinia. They’ve got a great selection of both savories and sweets, which have been consistently tasty time and time again.
The Food
When it comes to bakeries in Mount Lavinia, you’ve got a few good options, and Family Baker definitely qualifies. This is easily my most frequented bakery, partly due to its proximity to my house but also because they’ve maintained high standards for as long as I can remember.
They offer a comprehensive variety of savory and sweet baked goods priced very reasonably, considering the overall quality.
One thing they do particularly well are pies. These are priced between Rs. 80 – Rs. 100 for a sizeable portion. They’re also quite accurate when it comes to the description of fillings. When they say chicken and mushroom or mutton pie, you’re not going to be disappointed when you bite into it.
They also offer white sauce rolls which come in fish, vege and chicken. These are actually really flavoursome, with all three fillings working brilliantly with the the thick and creamy white sauce.
Their sweets are also as good as any you’ll find in Colombo. Their eclairs are good, but they still fall short when compared to the likes of Tasty Caterers. Their Kimbula banis (Rs. 40) is one thing I always grab on my way back home. It’s quite large, with a soft bun and just the right amount of sugar. They also do a really good butter cake.
Ambience
Family Baker is actually pretty large for a bakery since it shares the premises with the Family Super. They’ve plenty of people on the staff so their rarely shorthanded. They’ve even got a spacious dining area in the back in case you want to have quite bite to eat there itself.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for quality baked goods in Mount Lavinia, Family Baker is a solid choice. Their pies, kimbula banis and white sauce rolls are all excellent choices.
