The Viking.

The Viking in Rajagiriya, is a solid bet for some phenomenal food in the area. Their menu drives inspiration from a range of cuisines, and they make sure to add a touch of local taste whenever it's applicable.

The Food

The Viking menu has a lot of stuff to choose from, from fusion kottu and Sri Lankan-ised pasta to rice bowls, noodle bowls, and an impressive collection of burgers.

First up, we tried the Chicken Karaage. Drizzled with Japanese mayo and sprinkled with a handful of spring onions, these are some crunchy bits of heaven. The batter was thin and light, while the chicken itself had a juicy texture. Spicy, sweet and sour, their homemade BBQ sauce was a fine accompaniment for this chicken.

The Viking's take on this bowl of Biang Biang was brilliant. Served on a bed of hand-pulled wheat noodles dressed in chilli oil, it had a Hainanese-style chicken breast, diced iceberg lettuce and roasted peanuts.

The noodles were simply perfect — wide, chewy and yet, soft to the bite. There was a good heat in the chilli oil, which was balanced out by the sweet and salty chicken. The roasted peanuts gave an extra layer of flavour to the meal, while the lettuce was all about the fresh crunch.

Here we have the Panda Express — a combination of Orange Chicken, Chop suey and Egg Fried Rice. The fried rice had a good dose of wok breath, while the chop suey was well executed, with a variety of veggies — baby corn, bok choy, carrots and potatoes.

I just loved this Orange Chicken! If you're a sucker for the whole sweet and sour concept, this is right up your alley. Staying true to its name, it had a beautiful orange hue to it, and a strong zesty kick that emerges along with the sweet and sour elements.

The Viking Crispy Chicken Burger was of great flavour. There was a hefty, crusty fillet of chicken that's so juicy on the inside, and we loved the generous drizzle of nai miris-infused mayo in it. The bun seemed to have been sitting on the grill for a while, which has given that well-toasted texture to it.

Oh, this pretty beast! Beefsaurus, they call it. Stacked up high with well-grounded, well-seasoned beef patties, cheddar cheese slices, a layer of caramelised onions, pickle brine and mayo, it's one big, fat burger that's full of flavour.

The patties were so tender that they cut like butter, and it was evident that they have had the right touch from the grill. Everything becomes even better when the gooey cheese comes into play.

The French Fries at The Viking were a crispy, well-spiced up affair. We loved them!

Ambience & Service

In terms of ambience, The Viking has kept it simple, and that works well for them. They have both indoor and outdoor seating areas, both arrange with wooden furniture.

Inviting and friendly, the staff will make sure to give recommendations, whenever it appears like you need any.

Conclusion

The Viking impressed us with a lovely meal, and we're absolutely sure that they'd do the same to you. Most of their dishes range from Rs. 700 – Rs. 1500, which drags it to the affordable side of the spectrum.
