Having diabetes doesn’t mean that you always have to eat greens, or just settle for homemade meals. You can dine at a restaurant, as long as you’re careful with what you order. Fortunately, in recent years, Colombo has been able to score a whole bunch of cafes that infuse diabetic friendliness into their dishes in the most delicious way.
Seed Cafe
The calm and cosy Seed Cafe crafts up many flavourful, dolled-up dishes that are absolutely diabetic-friendly. The gluten-free Hummus and Roasted Pumpkin Bowl, that’s made with red pepper hummus, herb-roasted pumpkin wedges, quinoa, red pepper onion relish, cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, raw slaw, greens, garlic tahini dressing, and crunchy chickpeas is a safe bet that you can go for. They also do colourful Mexican Chipotle Bowl, a few vegan options, and healthy toasts, as well as a range of protein-packed salads.
Calorie Counter
Pulling off healthy treats in a delicious way is Calorie Counter’s forte. Their grilled specialities are the most diabetic-safe options you can choose. For example, check out the White Fish (Barramundi), which comes with some nicely pan-fried Barramundi fish with ratatouille, homemade basil and tomato coulis.
The Grind Coffeehouse
The picturesque food by The Grind Coffeehouse includes a good selection of diabetic-friendly dishes. The Grind Power Bowl is not only gluten-free, but also vegan, and has an ensemble of quinoa, mung beans, chickpeas, roasted carrots, superfood seeds, pumpkin puree, beetroot hummus, vegetable ribbons, and tomato salsa. If you like something on the seafood side, try the gluten-free Grilled Barramundi Bowl, which has grilled crispy skin barramundi, turmeric-infused quinoa, tomato salsa, rocket leaves, cucumber and basil pesto.
On the meat side, you have the Grilled Spiced Chicken Thigh Bowl, that’s comprised of grilled chicken thigh, quinoa, kale, avocado salsa, beetroot hummus, beetroot pickle, raw cabbage, carrot slaw, rocket leaves, pomegranate seeds, chia and superfood seeds.
Superfood Cafe
Healthy food can be delicious too, and the harvest bowls done by Superfood Cafe are enough testament to that. All of their harvest bowls are diabetic-friendly. You can simply choose from their super fresh range of veggies, greens and proteins and put together a bowl of your own, or go for a pre-customised one.
Cafe Kumbuk
Another sister cafe to Seed Cafe, Cafe Kumbuk serves up a few diabetic-friendly delicacies, including a delish Hummus Bowl. It arrives with hummus, pickled beetroot, gotukola mallum, cucumber salad, pickled green chilli, crispy pita slices and the option to get some vegan kebab or grilled chicken along with it.
Natural Eats
Natural Eats is all about healthy food. From Banana Oats Pancakes to Breadless Burrito to Quinoa bowl, their dishes are low in calories, full of nutrients, packed with flavour and totally diabetic-friendly. They also offer meal plans which you can customise to your liking and dietary preference.
Bowl’d
Bowl’d speciality is healthy poke bowls, and they’re diabetic safe. You can either build a bowl of your own with the given ingredients or choose one from the pre-customised bowls. If you’re opting for the latter, we highly recommend the Spicy Salmon Bowl and the Firecracker Chicken Bowl.
The Willow
The Willow is one of the best spots for eating deliciously prepared, vibrant smoothie bowls. By mixing and matching the vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, fluid add-ons and even protein add-ons, you can create a smoothie bowl to match your dietary condition.
Life’s Good Kitchen
Life’s Good Kitchen focuses on improving life with good, nutritious food. Thankfully, some of them are diabetic friendly, such as this Avocado egg Kurakkan Sandwich.
