The tale of two sisters, their friends and the perfect remix of Indian and Italian street food is available at Marine Drive, Bambalapitiya. If you’re looking for the perfect spot to grab a quick bite to eat by the sea, Gulabi Run is the place for you, be it after a busy workday or during a relaxed weekend. But don’t be fooled by the quaintness of the place, the food available will blow your mind.
There is a melt in your mouth range of choices from the savory to the sweet. Biting into any Gulabi Run item proves how much their food is made with love and care. They also have a selection of tangy beverages both hot and cold to quench your thirst after a delicious meal. Ranging from 150 LKR to 550 LKR, the food is affordable and delicious, you won’t be able to stop at one.
I had the opportunity to try their Rasmalai that is 250 LKR and it was a surprise to bite into the sweet cake that emerged from the milk.
You can only expect melt in your mouth goodness with all the sweet items at Gulabi Run.
Some might call Gulabi Run a dessert spot, but their savory items are just as good, if not better.
Even more of a surprise than the Rasmalai was the pizza in a pot that was available for just 250 LKR. The mix of cheese, pizza sauce and the crumbled dough in a clay pot was both novel and delicious.
Of course, which desi food spot would be desi without the famous pani puri? This is one more party in your mouth deliciousness from Gulabi Run.
But Gulabi Run is more than just it’s amazing food, they also have an amazing story that will get you rushing to check them out. The quaint food spot was started by the two sisters Aysha and Fathima who you can meet if you visit Gulabi Run, as well as their enthusiastic business partners Rimzan Ramis, who founded his own startup in 2019 and Safra Faiz with the support of their parents.
Despite the several lockdowns the country has gone through, the business has flourished thanks to the supply chain consisting only of self employed women. As much as the business gets from the community, they also give back with special themed nights and offers.
This is one street food spot you shouldn’t miss out on. But don’t worry if Bambalapitiya is too much of a drive, Gulabi Run has plans to expand into two more locations in Colombo, so keep an eye out for more news on their instagram!
