Menaka Indrakumar
The chai culture is catching in Colombo, with multiple outlets opening and places servicing chai. One place that we visited is Chaya Maaya. Located at a prime spot at Colombo 3, close to American National College and Abdul Gaffoor Mawatha.
Chaya Maaya started two months ago when the founder wanted to do a chai concept in the heart of Colombo. The cart is coloured in bright colours, and fairy lights are decorated at the location.
1. Cardamom Chai
The cardamom chai was one first tried, it was tasted strong and warm. The cardamon aroma was really good, and with every sip, you can taste the cardamon. The cardamon chai is priced at Rs 120.
2. Badam Chai
The Badam Chai was something different, and it’s after ages that I have had a proper Badam. Well, Badam prepared as Chai. The Badam Chai is priced at Rs 180.
3. Kheer
Moving on to the Kheer, the thick, sweet and hot beverage. The Kheer (original) is priced at Rs 250. Chaya Maaya serves a favourite of Chai, and experimenting the chai concept with Nannari Black Tea, priced at Rs 80, Ginger Black Tea priced at Rs 80 and the Organic Mint Green Tea priced at Rs 100. And the famous Masala Chai which originated in India is blended with a mixture of aromatic herbs and spices. And now a favourite of many is Rs 120.
It’s not just about chai and teas, but the snacks like the samosa, egg patties, and cake rusk. The samosa goes well with the chai and tea.
All the indigents used are sourced from overseas and rarely purchased from here. Looking for a different place to chill with chai, Chaya Maaya is the spot. With ample working space and seating. Sip a chai while watching the rush of the evening traffic, under the night starry sky.
