Uga
Residence (the restaurant is now branded rare) hosts the newest high tea in Colombo. It’s a tiered
experience ranging from scones to savories to sweets. At Rs. 1,500++ per
person we think it’s well worth.
We’ll start with the scones, the
simplest but nicest part of the meal, for us. The scones are home made and
just the right texture and taste. They’re mainly a delivery system for
large amounts of clotted cream and jam.
The selection of teas is also excellent,
good enough to have without sugar. We tried the vanilla and cinnamon blend
which we’d recommend.
Beyond that you get three tiers of stuff, which is intense. They give
free refills from some items, which we found honestly
unnecessary.
The bottom tier is a tender lamb stew, an oyster, and two pork
buns.
The next level has scotch eggs, two fish
items, and beef and ham hors d’oeuvres.
Then finally the top layers, which is the most interesting. There’s a
Jack Daniels ice cream in a white chocolate cup, which you should have
before it melts. Then a ridiculous amount of honeyed fruit and
chocolates.
Conclusion
It’s a lot of food and a nice 3 PM snack. We’d actually recommend
skipping lunch so you can enjoy everything, and maybe take it slow. Perhaps
it’s just cause they’re new and trying harder, but it’s one of the better
high tea options in the city now. Call 115 673 000 if you’d like
reservations.
