Ask And Thou Shall Receive.

A few days ago, Dinesh walked in to office with two huge chunks of brownies. When we asked him where they were from, he said he had got them for free. Some guy on Facebook was apparently handing out free brownies.

We were all extremely puzzled, coz say whaaat, was someone just putting up statuses asking who wanted free brownies?

As it turned out, the answer was yes.

There’s a really cool dude out there who wants to spread some happiness and is doing whatever he can to ensure it.

The guy, let’s call him Mr. M, wishes to remain anonymous. It’s really awesome to find someone as modest as this person, who does cool things like distributing brownies and wants no credit for it. (I’d also like to call him Batman, but maybe I shouldn’t go that far.) After his initial hesitation, when he finally agreed to speak to us about his initiative, he mentioned that he was motivated by the fact that people don’t ask for anything when they want it.

“”People just don’t seem to want to ask because they’re either too shy, or too reluctant. I wanted to make them a bit more comfy with the idea of asking,”” he said.

When he first started, he merely put up a Facebook status requesting people to comment if they wanted ice cream, and that he would deliver a flavour of their choice. The second time, he handed out chocolates. Sharing brownies is the third round of his incredible project.

He doesn’t bake the brownies, so he buys them out of his own pocket, wraps them up, adds a Thank You note to each parcel and delivers them as well. This guy is seriously made of sunshine and rainbows and puppies.

Mr. M. is self-employed, so whenever he begins an #AskGiveShare activity on FB, he just allocates a specific day to hop in to a tuk and complete his delivery rounds. There are certain conditions, though — you have to live around Nugegoda, Athul Kotte, Pita Kotte, Madiwela, Battaramulla, Pelawatta, or Thalawathugoda.

Despite Mr. M. being completely serious about his initiative, many people on his Facebook were skeptical, and messaged him asking if he was for real. Many others didn’t believe him until he actually showed up on their doorsteps. The nice part? Among others, he also ended up meeting old friends he hadn’t seen in ages. They rekindled old friendships and bonded over brownie deliveries.

Having nicely wrapped, yummy brownies delivered to your doorstep is one of the best feelings ever. As Dinesh put it, “”I was touched by his attention to minute details. Collecting our address and telephone number, the wrapping, the card… my faith in humanity grew. I was able to share his goodwill with others, and hope this thought and action will inspire everyone else to give without any expectations.””

I was super skeptical at the beginning (I’ve clearly lost all faith in humanity somewhere along the way) but this reassured me that there are nice people in the world.
Plus I learnt that at times, it IS okay to accept candy from strangers. Either way, my faith in humanity is restored, and I realise that it doesn’t take all that much to make the world a happier place to live in 🙂

Remember, all it takes is a simple step. If not brownies, anything else flies as well. Even a smile, or a handmade card.

In the meantime, hats off to Mr. M!
