Acropol Restaurant which formerly resided on R.A De Mel Mawatha has moved to a new location on Galle Road, Colombo 03. If you’re a fan of Shawarmas it’s worth a visit.
Food
Acropol is known for shawarma, being one of the first to bring the cylindrical meat delivery system to our shores. They still serve them up – and well – but only after 6 PM, which is kinda a bummer. On our second visit we went for lunch and they only had fried rice (Rs. 240), which was all right but fundamentally dull and not what the place is known for.
On a dinner visit we had the Greek Special Shawarma (Rs. 390) and Chicken Burger (Rs. 290) and they were pretty good. The Greek Shawarma is a sort of roll your own shawarma, you can customize each bite with as much chicken and sides as you like. The regular shawarma just comes rolled up in paper, with fries inside if you order like that.
These are reliably good. The fried rice is not notable, so for now we’d recommend this as a dinner/take-away place.
Ambience & Service
The service was quite fast with our orders being brought in 15 minutes. The waiters were friendly, but the not the most informative about the dishes. The place itself is quite small with seating for around 20 people. The interior is dominated by a red-black theme which works well overall. It’s well air conditioned for a small place, so you won’t be feeling the heat even during mid day.
Location
There has been a ton of misinformation about the location of Acropol since it moved. On their web and print materials they still provide the wrong address (on Duplication Road). The new address is 662, Galle Road, Colombo 3 which you can only find out by calling them, or by reading this, which you’re doing, so fine. It’s at the corner of Galle Road and Schofield Place. This is just past Green Cabin but it’s very easy to miss because there’s a tree in front.
Conclusion
If you’re in the mood for a Shawarma or other Mediterranean food, Acropol is still one of the best places in town. It’s a good place to drop by with a few friends. But we suggest you stick to their Greek cuisine and avoid their lunch set menus.
