A&M cupcakes is a cute little cupcake shop located on the Galle Road, opposite Barefoot. Cupcakes are trendy, tasty little treats – good for eating and even better for instagramming. They became hugely popular in the West, spawning whole establishments and merchandise devoted to selling the cakey confections – cupcake patterned bedsheets, many a pastel-hued ‘keep calm and eat cupcakes’ poster, expensive little bracelet charms and so on. The whole cupcake aesthetic practically became its own genre of interior design and decor.
And Colombo has recently awoken to the rewards that can be reaped from indulging in the rather twee, sugary fad. Our home bakers abound, selling mini cupcakes, red velvets, cake pops, and so on, each baker trying to outdo the other with an extra exotic or unheard of flavour.
So where does A&M fit in within this rising wave of tiny, fashionable desserts? They’re good – perhaps not quite as exciting or rich as Munchkin or Sita – but they’re more affordable at just Rs. 100 a cake, and have an interesting selection of flavours – tangy orange, oreo, mint choc chip, coffee glaze. If you’re in the area, this a perfectly respectable stop to aid and abet a sugar rush. Wallpapered in pink and with great packaging, A&M looks exactly like what you’d imagine a cupcake store to be – cute, bright and cheerful. It’s a sweet place.
