Colombo’s fast food scene is ever so picking up , and we visited Big plate one of the upcoming all purpose restaurant down the ever so buzzing Marine Drive.
The Ambience
The ambience is very welcoming and charming. The first floor did have an outdoor Seaview area for dining. The atmosphere was chilling and cool. Staff were friendly and attentive. The service we received was positive. They made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience.
The Food
- Appetizers (Fish Fingers with Hot Garlic Sauce)
For those who enjoy seafood here is a dish that you can try as a starter. This appetizer had a crunchy texture and a soft inside. This dish was best enjoyed with the special hot garlic sauce they serve as a dip.
- Tower Burger
Newly introduced Tower Burger (Rs. 1350/-) had piles of crispy chicken, ham, cheese, egg, spicy sauce etc.. this had a fantastic combination of flavors. The savory and natural juicy sweetness followed by the spicy sauce which builds with each bite gave a great balance of flavor that tasted amazingly delicious.
All I can say is it’s a top notch.
My strong recommendation would be to get this in you before it drops of the special board. And remember you can double up too. Just make sure you are hungry.
- Chopsuey Mixed Rice
The portion of chopsuey rice (regular-Rs. 1800/-) did taste good. It was so satisfying all on its own. I barely touched the rice at all. It was perfectly balanced and was extra saucy. Anyway the whole point of chopsuey is that crazy delicious sauce, which is combined together with glorious meat and vegetable stir fry that’s served over rice. The vegetables were well cooked, but when it comes to the meat the beef was a little undercooked, the chicken was too fried and and the seafood that I could see was few prawns.
- Shawarma
Serving us the large Shawarma (Rs. 850/-) at big plate didn’t disappoint us. It had the best flavor of the popular Middle Eastern street food. They did have thin slices of tender meat shaved and served on pita bread wraps along with dips.
- Mixed platter
This Arabic traditional cuisine the Middle Eastern Shawarma mixed platter (Rs. 2299/-) that was served with pita bread, salad, small tandoori chicken slices and Fried beef stew along with some fries to fill the platter which had two dips, which was hot garlic sauce and a cheese dip was exceptional. The quantity they had on the platter was worth the price 100%.
- Curacao Blue
This was literally a smoky blue beast of a drink. The blue curacao (Rs. 440/-) was electric blue in appearance, ever clear and blue curacao with lemon and mint leaves combined together played it right making us feel extremely refreshed. Dry ice was added to provide a mesmerizing ooze of condensed water vapors. This is a perfect addition to your summer drink list.
Conclusion
This was overall a family run restaurant with great staff working to make the customers happiness their priority. The food was fantastic. They had local fast food, Chinese and Indian in the menu. Our experience at big plate was satisfying. they did succeed in giving off a very memorable experience.
