Bread is a staple in many parts of the world, including Sri Lanka. If you like your bread, homemade, we recommend Bread.lk and it's not any ole loaf of bread you find in the bakery. Bread.lk is an online platform where you can opt to place your orders for various types of freshly baked sourdough bread.
Most of the bread is made out of flour, water and salt with zero additives. Bread.lk uses slow fermentation to get the best flavour and nutrition from the grain. The sourdough bread is made with naturally occurring wild yeast and beats commercial yeasted bread on taste and smell every time.

The Bread
We ordered a loaf of Apricot and Lavendar Brioche (Rs 1950), Wholegrain Sourdough (Rs.450) and a Countrywhite Sourdough (Rs. 400). For those who don't live within their delivery radius, you can opt to pick it up from either Park Street Gourmet or Dolce Italia.
We picked our order from Dolce Italia. The bread comes wrapped in brown paper and the aroma was as if you have walked straight into a bakery with warm loaves of bread right outta the oven.
We found the Wholegrain and the Countrywhite a tad hard to cut through with a normal bread knife, but once through you will find Sourdough bread has a recognizable sour taste to it. It is a very mild flavour, and something you can get used to. We reckon one of these steamed loaves with nice thick beef gravy or a soup would work well.
The Apricot and Lavender Brioche was a treat to the palate. This was soft on the inside like a raisin bread with huge chunks of Apricot lavishly included in the bread. While this too had its distinct and sour flavour, it was a far cry from the first two loaves we tried out.
On the menu, you will also find Raisin Cinnamon Treacle Sourdough – Rs. 750, Dark Chocolate and Cranberry Brioche – Rs. 1850, Braided Brioche Loaf – Rs 1230 and Ten Seed & Grain Sourdough Bread – Rs. 750.
Conclusion
You have probably seen this type of bread in olden day movies – oval in shape, brown and crusty, broken by hand and soused in gravy. That's the type of feeling you get when you literally break bread – because you will find your knife just might not saw through.
We placed our order midweek and collected it a few days later, which is probably why it was harder than expected. Perhaps in their defence, it is softer right out of the oven.
Bread.lk bakes on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at various times and delivers within Colombo 2 through to Colombo 7.
