Caked is a home bakery specialising in french macarons, cupcakes and cakes. French macarons are notoriously difficult to master, but they do an excellent job.
The Food
The Macarons
Caked’s macarons are visually quite stunning. The top layers are smooth and the colours are pastel but vivid – some thought has clearly been put into how they look alongside one another. In terms of size they’re large – bigger and flatter than most of the macarons I’ve encountered. I’d say they could perhaps be a tiny bit fuller – but these are small details.
We tried a range of flavours – chocolate, salted caramel, vanilla, raspberry and pistachio. They were all very good, but the salted butter caramel is by far our favourite. The flavour is spot on – creamy and sweet with just the right crackle of saltiness. The raspberry was the only real let down; it was overly squidgy with the entire structure collapsing on the first bite. Not the ideal way to go if you’re a macaron. But that aside, these are overall a great attempt at a rather delicate and difficult dish – the fillings spread right out to the edges and the biscuit layers held the macarons together in a soft, sandwichy way yielding a light crunch without any dryness.
In addition to being notoriously tricky, macarons are also notoriously expensive – Caked sells theirs at Rs. 150 per macaron. So it’s the kind of dish you really have to nail if you want to avoid angry customers. We were pleased with what we got for our money.
The Cupcakes
Caked sells cupcakes for about Rs. 100 each, available in vanilla, mocha, chocolate chip, etc. We liked these alot. The cake was soft – almost airy – and topped with a rich yet light swirl of icing (kind of mousse like). It’s a creative and yummy take on a done to death dessert. They’re very good.
Conclusion
Caked pays a lot of attention to presentation, which we love. Their packaging is simple and stylish and their goodies are delicious and rich while also being very neat – you won’t spot a crumb out of place here. Caked is ideal for event purposes – Valentine’s, birthdays, hen nights – because everything they do is pretty and stylish in addition to being actually tasty. Whether for personal consumption or parties, we recommend giving them a call.
