So among all the delivery joints thankfully cropping up in Colombo – Choco Luv has made itself known as an unlikely contender in the realm of pizza delivery.
As you probably know, they’re typically known for their oreo, ferrero and nutella flavoured shakes and desserts. Though their main restaurant did not get a flattering review from us, their new waffles outlet did, so we thought we would give their delivery a fair chance.
Menu & Delivery
Choco Luv’s pizzas are delivered late, ours took almost two hours. They’ve got a handful of pizza options according to the guy on the phone – chicken, beef, seafood, nutella, and all only in large size. They’ve also got burgers, wraps and their milkshakes. The pizzas are priced at around Rs. 1400 though the nutella one was just Rs. 1300.
The Food
One thing you can’t go wrong with is slathering nutella over things. Put nutella over anything and it will probably taste fantastic. So we liked the nutella pizza – there was a good coating of the stuff with nuts and some strawberry embellishment, but the pizza was just soft bread really.
It all went downhill from there. We also got a beef pizza and chicken pizza, and they were more or less indistinguishable. It tasted like someone had just taken my aunty’s home cooked chicken and beef curries and plastered it all over thick pizza bread (and not even the chef aunty, but the lazy one who just microwaves things). So it was edible, but pretty disappointing by ordinary pizza standards.
We foolishly went all out and ordered a burger and a ‘cheese chicken steak’ wrap too. This stuff was seeped in oil, especially the lanky fries, the burger was edible in a canteen-food kind of way with very hard fried slices of chicken, and the wrap was just an ultra-oily pancake stuffed with oily chicken curry. At Rs. 650 and Rs. 750, these depressed me the most.
Conclusion
We were glad at first that we knew one more place in Colombo to get doorstep delivery from, so it was with a heavy heart that we rubbed Choco Luv out of our list of preferences. The delivery is slow, but mostly the quality of pizzas is terribly contradictory to the prices.
