EDIT: We ordered from HappySocks.com in Sweden first, but have recently found out we’ve got a local retailer that has Happy Socks for better prices (d’oh!) so we’ve updated our review accordingly.
Happy Socks is a Swedish company that delivers quirky, colourful socks worldwide. Sweden is always coming up with cool stuff (IKEA, Absolut Vodka, ABBA) so this sock idea is no surprise.
Socks aren’t a big deal in Bata-slipper-friendly Sri Lanka, it hardly cooperates with our tropical weather, and the only people who wear them are men in weddings and meetings, and the occasional hipster. Still, if you like socks, Happy Socks does very comfy and unique designs.
The Stuff
Our happy socks made us very happy – they’re very soft and wearable on an ordinary rainy day indoors. Most of the designs on the site are dotty or stripey, but the general theme seems to be happy colours. This pair like the others, on their main site, were marked at $12, but on Adams Retail, the local source, the socks are all for Rs. 850.
The main site has also got a selection of tights and underwear, following the same dotty fun theme. We got these blue tights and for some reason they’re less expensive than the ordinary socks, at $8 or Rs. 1000. Worth checking out if you want to dress up for a party or look like Zooey Deschanel. Happy Socks undies cost Rs. 2500 though.
The Website & Delivery
The main website is super fun for the eyes and it’s user friendly. There are socks for women, men and kids, combo packs, and Happy Socks gift boxes.
Once you place your order online though, it takes forever to get to Sri Lanka (1 month and 4 days, in our case) so it makes more sense to order from the local site, which delivers in 2 days. There’s less variety on this site, and there’s only socks and no tights or underwear available, but they’ve still got plenty to pick from.
Conclusion
Happy Socks is probably irrelevant to most Sri Lankans, but if you’re one of the few who enjoys dressing quirky, is heading to colder climes, or just likes the feel of colourful socks on a rainy day, these guys do the job. Considering quality and uniqueness their prices are pretty decent too.
