Home Basics is a relatively unfrequented lifestyle store located at the Tisara Plaza in Kohuwela. There’s a substantial variety of linen, kitchenware, bathware and tableware. Most items appear to be sourced from all over South Asia. They also have fake flowers which, lo-and-behold are uncharacteristically ungarish.
Unfortunately the staff do tend to follow customers around but can be very helpful if you have a specific inquiry.
There is a large collection of products just for children – bed linen, colourful rugs, feather boas, painting sets, Spongebob Squarepants tables, Dora the Explorer tables and toys that could actually be fun (Painting your own teddy bear anyone?). It’s all colour coded too and apart from convenience, I’m a sucker for colour coding – everything looks so neat and well organized. I imagine it’s a relief for parents who can head straight for their kids’ favourite hues instead of having to peruse the whole store to find something.
Colombo’s ever expanding population of bakers will be interested to know that cupcake stands, cupcake covers and cupcake toppers are also available.
Home Basics is also one of the few places where there is a decent range of party supplies (once again, colour coded). They have everything: cups, flyers for birthdays, table covers, quirky coloured straws and party hats.
In terms of home ware, however, the quality of products isn’t great. There are some decent pots and pans, but the dustbins, towels and linen aren’t amazing.
