In a land where the home-chefs have risen to claim authority, you can expect a new one to pop up here, there and everywhere. Jay's Kitchen has been in the game for a short time but they show no signs of declining.
*Note: Check out their updated menu here.
The Process
Their menu is very limited with about five savoury dishes ranging from beef roast to fried rice and their fudgy chocolate brownies (requires a minimum order of 12 pieces).
You can call them up at 0773980433 to place your order or message them via Facebook or the mobile number provided. We placed our order a day before and promptly received a reply saying that the order will be delivered by 12:30-1:00 PM the next day. As promised the food showed up at exactly 1 PM, steaming hot. The office went rabid at the smell and we had to hold a small cleansing ritual to ward off all evil spirits.
The Food
We got a portion of the Sloppy Chicken n' Mash (Rs. 700) and a portion of the Sticky Pork Ribs (Rs. 900).
The Chicken n Mash wasn't really sloppy, it was just an enormous piece of chicken thigh served with some standard mash. The chicken was cooked beautifully and was a tender pink on the inside, fall off the bone soft and boasted a flavour so rich we couldn't stop eating. A hint of oregano seeped through and you could see the seasoning smattered atop the glistening brown skin.
The mash wasn't as smooth as I'd have liked it but it was still tasty. It looked like it had a generous helping of butter and was creamy to the touch. Salt to pepper ratio was fine too. Overall a delicious and hearty meal.
'Where is the pig?' Bhagya boomed. In a matter of minutes, it was all gone as most of my coworkers swarmed towards the dish, oohing and ahhing over what looked like about 3 ribs glazed generously in BBQ sauce. There were also a few slices of garlic bread that turned out to be a bit on the soggy side but made a good combo with the pork and sauce.
According to Chandana, the pork wasn't exactly fall-off-the-bone soft but it was still worth the price. The ribs had plenty of meat, and proved to be very filling.
Conclusion
If you're ever in the mood for treating yourselves, or you plan on having an in-house date night then hit these guys up. Their food's good, service is on par and delivery's free around Colombo. Plus they've got Chocolate Guinness cake that you can order by the pound, so why not go all out?
