Many moons ago, Bhagya came to office with a tub full of chocolate ice cream. After trying a scoop of it, every single one of us was in awe – simply because it was, by far, the richest and the creamiest ice cream we've ever encountered. And that is how we got to know about King Cone Ice Cream2, a home-based ice creamery.
The ice cream scene in Colombo has been getting strong for the last couple of years. Last time we checked, there were 13 independent ice cream parlors in Colombo and King Cone Ice Cream2 is a recent entrant in this fray. Crafting up some high-quality ice creams with a unique bunch of flavors, back in the day it was available only for delivery. But, now they've started teaming up with other ventures to distribute their ice cream – including Isso, and 24 Seven (Geek HQ uses King Cone in their ice cream based desserts).
Ice Cream
We grab our ice cream flavors at the 24 Seven. These are 100ml tubs (cardboard ones, I must say), each priced at Rs. 350. Only three flavors were available there – Double Dutch, Speculoos, and Maltover.
Let me start with our favorite out of the three – the Double Dutch. This is more like their take on chocolate ice cream, but deeply flavored than any ice cream of the same kind. Boasting strong notes of dark chocolate, the flavor here was so intense that it hit all the marks of our cocoa radar. The texture was incredibly creamy and luscious, and it's highly doubtful that you'd find a local brand that would beat it. Smiles grew with each and every spoonful we took – which is what ice cream is all about.
If you're a fan of Maltesers, Maltover should be right up your alley. The base here resembles the malt flavor, and a quite powerful one at that. But, it's very milky, which has subdued the malt flavor to the point that it's perfect, and not overpowering.
We were totally impressed by the presence of the Maltesers in it. There was so much – both crushed and balls, so you get your Maltesers fix in every spoonful.
This is the Speculoos ice cream, which is like a version of Butterscotch ice cream, but has a swirl of caramel in it. Packed with the sweet, buttery and creamy flavors of Lotus Biscoff, the hints of caramel made it very interesting, and sweeter. If you're not the most sweet-toothed person, we'd suggest that you steer clear on this, but if not, just gobble up!
The King Cone Ice Cream2 products are free of gelatine, egg, artificial flavors, artificial colors, and alcohol. We thought that the ice cream would melt so fast as they were sitting outside the freezer for a few minutes while we take the pictures, but surprisingly, they managed to hold up firm. However, they melted so smoothly as we put the spoonfuls in our mouth, and left a very creamy feel on the palate.
Conclusion
If you prefer King Cone Ice Cream2 in a massive tub form, you can simply give a call to 077 827 8855, or reach out to them through their Facebook page. You can access their menu from the same page, and get a good idea on what they've got. You might find the prices to be a little intimidating than your average ice cream, but trust me – it's fair considering the high quality, imported ingredients that they use to create these innovative bunch of flavors.
