Raigam doesn’t stand out for its clothing and fabrics, but they do have good and surprisingly affordable couches.
There are at least four big handloom shops in Colombo – Barefoot, Seyln, Kandygs and Ko Lanka. Raigam is probably a lesser cousin, sandwiched in a small shop on Bauddhaloka Mawatha, near the Dutch Burger Union and the new (VOC Cafe).
Raigam’s has some of the same stuff at similar prices women’s handloom shirts for around Rs. 2000, monk bags for less. They also have table linen, toys, etc. What makes Raigam’s a bit different is that they sell decent couches.
Finding couches in Colombo is difficult. Either they insanely expensive (Roux Brothers) or still pretty expensive or kinda tacky and still not cheap (Damro). Getting a regular sofa that isn’t pleather or oddly shaped or uncomfortable is hard. Getting a nice one that’s less than a lakh (Rs. 100,000) is near impossible.
Hence Raigam. They sell a regular three seater for Rs. 47,000 and a great big L-shaped sofa for Rs. 80,000. If you want to change the fabric it’s Rs. 750-780 per meter (16 meters for the small one, 34 for the big). While this is not shockingly cheap, it’s much cheaper than many other shops, and for something simple and quite sittable.
