How To Order
Social Colombo delivers through PickMe Food, and a number of other mobile platforms. For direct orders, you can contact them via 0705941989.
I opted for direct delivery as I'm not based within its PickMe Food delivery range. They're quite responsive to the messages, accept bank transfers and cash on delivery, and my order went through quite smoothly.
The Food
The menu of Social Colombo includes a range of Asian, Italian and a few burgers. They were out of burgers on the day we ordered, so we decided on a Cuttlefish & Prawn Fried Rice (Rs. 950), "Pesto La Vista, Baby" with Chicken (Rs. 1150) and Bao Buns with Pork Char Siu (Rs. 750).
The fried rice stayed true to its name by featuring tons of prawns and cuttlefish. It also included an egg, as well as a bunch of veggies, like carrots, spring onions and onions. Perfectly capturing the essence of the wok, the overall flavour was nicely salty and tasty. Make good use of the chilli paste for extra flavour. The Chicken Pesto La Vista has a local touch, as this Pesto sauce includes cashews and green chillies. Pasta is meant to be eaten fresh out of the stove, so I wasn't the biggest fan of this, but hey, that's just me.
Thoroughly soaked in olive oil, the spaghetti was a little overcooked, but the flavours were good. Had quite a bit of chicken too. Plus, the little tub of parmesan they send, helps. Make sure to mix everything up well before eating.
Oh, the buns! You have got to try the buns! These are the fluffiest bao buns I've ever had. Light as cotton, they were soft, perfectly shaped and came loaded with some nicely done pork char siu, pickled veggies, a handful of coriander leaves, sliced red chillies and Chinese BBQ sauce. Kicking off with a sweet note, they also have a satisfying zest that ends with a subtle swirl of spiciness.
Conclusion
We're counting days to return to the sandy beach of Una while grabbing a bite at Social Unawatuna, but until then, Social Colombo suffices. Rich flavours, good food and fair prices; it'd be great if they can open a cafe in Colombo with dine-in facilities once the COVID-19 chaos are under control.
