Sugar Bistro Galle Fort is a smaller rendition of Sugar Bistro and Wine Bar in Colombo, serving the same great food and drink at a stylish new address at the Galle Dutch Hospital.
We like Sugar Bistro a lot and it’s currently the most buzzing place in the Galle Dutch Hospital. The food is good, the service is great and overall it’s just a very pleasant place to sit down for a meal.
Location/Ambience
Like its parent in Colombo, Sugar Galle has a similarly stylish, cosmopolitan feel. It inhabits a smaller space, but is located along a long walkway so there are always people passing by, giving the place a nice buzz. The interior is chilled out and modern – they’ve gone for slate tones and wraparound cushioned seating.
You can enjoy a glass of wine alongside some gentle tunes and revel in that nice feeling you get from just being inside the Galle Fort. It’s smaller than its Colombo counterpart, but that isn’t a detriment. It’s cosy.
The Food
A slight disappointment is that the menu is exactly the same – a few Galle updates would have been nice – but hey, at least you won’t miss out on old favourites like the steak sandwich and Sugar Daddy. We had the classic beef burger (Rs. 650) and jerk chicken (Rs. 1000). Both meals were good.
We highly recommend the home made cinnamon and honey ice cream (Rs. 450), served on a crisp wafer and drizzled liberally with honey. Delicious. I also had the double chocolate ice cream which was a rich treat of icy thickness, ever so slightly bitter on the aftertaste.
Conclusion
All in all, Sugar Bistro is a tenant we’re happy to see at the Galle Dutch Hospital. They do chilled out dining really well.
