The Supun Arcade on Galle Road is probably Colombo’s cleanest and emptiest mall. It’s actually eerie because the stores are fully stocked, computers, phones and (inexplicably) Chinese vases on the first floor; a fullish department store up top. There also seems to be ample parking below. Just no people.
Walking through the Arcade, you half expect to see zombies pawing at the gates. It’s that empty. The shops, however, are clean and well equipped. There’s Fonos, a phone store with a lot of accessories and non-garish cases. There’s also a laptop store and then there’s the unattended Chinese ceramics store. Here they have human height vases and urns (whatever you call them) that cost upwards of Rs. 15,000. And there’s no one there to even sell them.
Upstairs there’s a decent department store, though the mosquito rackets we bought don’t work. This is a branch of the quite useful Supun Super Center on Duplication Road. They have a decent selection of toys and fancy gift items (holographic picture frames, kitsch) as well as pots and plates and more useful items. Prices are OK.
Would we recommend the Supun Arcade? Well, honestly yes. It’s non-hectic, there seems to be ample parking below and everything is clean and well stocked. They even have a competent website. This place baffles us.
If you like shopping in post-apocalyptic peace, this is the place.
