If you’re ever at the Borella junction (Baseline and Cotta Road) you’ll see the stairs leading down. These steps lead pedestrians under and across the road and have, over time, became home to a fair amount of shops. Here you can get everything from cell phones to ‘fancy gift items’. Actually, that’s about it.
The main items here are plastic hairclips, bags, weird kitschy gifts, holographic portraits of horses. These are commonly called fancy gift items, but their are neither especially fancy nor very good gifts. They are items. Besides these, there are also quite a few cell phone shops, selling both new phones and unlocking phones you bring.
There are also, of course, the ubiquitous lottery ticket sellers at the exits.
We can’t say we’d necessarily recommend going out of your way to visit the Borella Underpass, but it is an interesting glimpse of what Colombo subway culture might be.
