The Vege Way is one of the latest additions to the clustered stalls of wholesome foods, beverages and knick knacks that is the Good Market. They sell savoury vegetarian snacks, eggless goodies and soy ice cream.
The Good Market is one of our new favourite places, and a Thursday evening spent perusing the happy cluster of well meaning stalls usually sees us driving home happily laden with lemon and lime tarts (The English Cake Company), paninis (Panino) and bottles of tongue burning ‘firestarter‘ chilli sauce. There are several worthy stalls at the Good Market, but these are the three that constitute our holy trinity.
The Vege Way is one of the newest stalls to join the family. Offering eggless cupcakes, tofu wraps, and soy ice cream, this a tempting enticement to eat healthy. Their tofu wrap is excellent – you get currified chunks of soft tofu smothered in a tomatoey sauce and curled in a fat roti (although not sure how healthy this part is). Tofu is an underused ingredient in Sri Lankan kitchens and it’s a tasty, healthy alternative to meat. Done well, it can be delicious.
While the Vege Way opens up desserts to vegans with their eggless cupcakes, I wasn’t a fan (but this could just be because the chocolate flavoured ones were gone). Unless you’re actually vegan or are just trying to be healthy, there are probably better sweet options around (Sweet Wishes by Vish, English Cake Company).
So while the Vege Way doesn’t quite push our golden triangle of stalls into a quadrangle, they’re still good. The savoury stuff is definitely worth a try, and we look forward to more flavours and dishes. Perhaps a lighter bread on the tofu wrap, perhaps some hummus and falafel. This is a good place though and there’s potential, especially with the savoury stuff.
We forgot to take down prices but the total for a cupcake and tofu wrap came to Rs. 330.
