Wonderland.

Wonderland is an ice cream and smoothie joint in Malabe that has a huge range of stuff on their menu, and it’s quite cheap too. Their smoothie glasses are tall and they’ve got cool flavours like Milo and bubblegum. It is all the way in Malabe though, so all you people in central Colombo, suck it up.

The Menu

These guys have a Facebook page that focuses on their special ‘fried ice cream’ machines – so don’t be misled into thinking they sell fried ice cream (I was), but they do sell those machines at another location. After the initial epic disappointment of discovering there would be no fried ice cream, we ordered a few things from their menu and had a seat: a scoop each (Rs. 50) of Blue Moon, Red Velvet and Chocolate Marshmallow, a Faluda Dream sundae (Rs. 170) and an Avacado Blush smoothie (Rs. 200).

Wonderland is a really fun place for kids – they’ve got interesting names on their menu, and they use a lot of colouring and sprinkles. The flavours are mysterious – Blue Moon had an awesome distinct bubblegum flavour, Red Velvet had a bit of that too mixed with vanilla, and Chocolate Marshmallow didn’t taste like ordinary chocolate though we didn’t taste much marshmallow in it either. We tried asking the girl at the counter about the flavours – what was in ‘Pebbles’ or ‘Blue Moon’, but she didn’t say, either because she didn’t know or because the recipes were a secret.

The Faluda Dream had faluda flavour and vanilla in it, with plenty of extra sweet toppings (sprinkles, jelly pieces, kasa kasa seeds and sweet vermicelli). It reminded us a bit of Rio’s smarties and jelly ridden ice cream.

We are huge fans of their smoothies. The Avacado Blush came in a gigantic glass, topped with fun swirly colouring. It was milky and the flavour came out strong and creamy.

Service & Ambience

Wonderland is a really small, clean space with a few bar stools in the front and two wooden tables inside. You get their signature colourful circles everywhere, and a small unimpressive selection of local candy near the cashier’s counter. Their most popular visitors are school kids. The service is usually quite fast, but if there are school kids around the counter, with just two people manning the place, it could take you a while to get your order.

Conclusion

Wonderland is a super affordable stop for ice cream and smoothies – the ice cream is good, the smoothies are great, and mostly, it’s the range that we appreciate. Some of the interesting sounding things on their menu include Cookie Cream, Coconut Crunch, Milo Cream, Toffee Cream and Ice Cream Sandwich, plus they’ve got a long juice menu from the average ones to soursop, veralu, cantaloupe melon and delum. You can get a mocktail here too for Rs. 200 – pina colada, shirley temple and mojitos among others. Plus it’s all for 200 bucks or less.
