This Father’s Day is Sunday June 21st. Here’s some ideas on places to take your dad, to shop and more. As you’d expect, all the events are on Sunday itself. As always, comment if you’ve got more ideas.

The Kingsbury
The Kingsbury does one of our favorite buffets (healthy veggies galore, but also lots of decadent seafood and roasts). For Father’s Day they have a buffet for Rs. 3,750 per person, including a glass of sparkling/beer/mocktail. The brunch bill also gets you 25% off at the Senses Spa, if your dad wants to chill.
The buffet runs from 11:30 AM to 3 PM at Harbour Court.
If you want to take your dad out to one of their restaurants, they can dine free. So basically 50% off. This applies at Yue Chuan (try the Szechuan specials) for lunch and dinner and The Ocean seafood restaurant (dinner).
For reservations, call 771 087 720.
Waters Edge
Water’s Edge is having an all-American BBQ for Father’s Day, starting at 7:30 PM. So you can expect steaks, ribs, corn on the cob, hot dogs, etc. It costs Rs. 3,250 per person and the first 100 dads get a complimentary beer.
For reservations call Sanjeewa on 774 827 168. There’s more info on their FB page.
Mount Lavinia Hotel
Mount is offering a buffet at their Governor’s Restaurant plus free pool and beach access, and a beer. The buffet runs from 12:30 to 3:00 PM. The Mount Lavinia Hotel is a beautiful and historic location with views across the water to the city. If you live around there or want to just feel a bit closer to the beach, it’s a good spot.
For reservations call 112 711 711.
Bavarian
If your dad wants a hearty steak or pork knuckle and some beer, you can’t go wrong with The Bavarian. Reservations highly recommended.
rare by Residence (Uga)
We’ve been putting this on every list, but if you want to take your dad out for a modern Sri Lankan meal in an intimate setting rare (formerly just Uga Residence) is a recommended spot.
Paan Paan
Paan Paan has a promotion where you can write a postcard to your dad from any of their outlets. When he receives it, you can both come to an outlet to claim some unspecified goodies. More info here.
GAMU (Gift Ideas)
Lexon Gift Depot 112314500
49 Braybrooke Street, Colombo 2
Sri Lankan corporate gifts items too often veer towards hideous crystal figurines and assorted junk that you try to hide rather than display. The stuff at Lexon is actually useful. As you enter there’s classy but expensive pens (Rs. 5,000 up), watches, iPad cases etc. As you go left there’s wall clocks (around Rs. 6,000 up) and then a range of intelligently designed office things.
Kiito Bespoke 773026562
19 First Flood, Main Wing, Arcade Independence Square, Colombo 7
This is one case where it’s best to go with your dad, to get him fitted for a bespoke suit. The Independence Arcade outlet is quite nice and has more fabrics, but you can also go to their Rosmead Place atelier and get suits, shirts, and pants a bit cheaper. The quality is quite good and it’s a treat to own something tailored just for you, or in this case, dad.
House Of Wines 11 4 502902
20 Flower Road, Colombo 3
House Of Wines does, as the name implies, just wines. So no scotch or anything, but they do have a nice collection of wines (and champagnes). If you’ve been ‘borrowing’ wine from your dad for ages as I have, Father’s Day is a chance to pay him back.
Cheeseland 777274272
93/5, Dutugemunu Street, Kohuwala
If you’re getting wine, perhaps you’d like some cheese with that. Cheeseland is an importer that brings down cheese direct from Holland. They’re really tasty, punchy cheeses but they ain’t cheap, ranging from Rs. 875 – Rs. 2500 for 250g.
Chapters 115572572
302, Galle Road, Colombo 4
Books are always a good gift. Chapters isn’t the biggest or most comprehensive bookshop (try Sarasavi) but it’s a chill place to visit and they have a nice curated selection.
Barefoot 112589305
704 Galle Road, Colombo 3
Barefoot has a lot of everything, and a great book selection as well. Besides that your dad could always use a sarong, and classic Barefoot sarongs tend to last forever.
Happy Socks
happysockslk.com
Everybody needs socks, and Happy Socks has some funky ones. They have a local distributor who sells them for around Rs. 850 and delivers fast.
