From a number of health benefits to cooling down our body, it’s hard to believe that one would hate a cup of good yogurt. Luckily, we have a whole bunch of local brands to satisfy our yogurt needs.
As you can probably remember, a few months ago, we rounded up all the OG set yogurts and did a taste-off. So this time around, we went with the flavored ones – both stirred and set yogurts that are available on the shelves of our popular supermarkets.
So the contenders of this taste-off are as follows.
Brand | Type | Size | Price (Rs.) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Anchor Newdale – Mango | Set | 80g | 35 | |
Anchor Newdale – Strawberry | Set | 80g | 35 | |
Anchor – Mixed Berry Low-Fat | Stirred | 100g | 80 | |
Kotmale – Vanilla | Stirred | 100g | 55 | |
Kotmale – Mixed Berries | Stirred | 100g | 75 | |
Kotmale – Strawberry | Stirred | 100g | 75 | |
Rich Life- Low-Fat Mixed Berry | Stirred | 100g | 75 |
In this taste-off, what we’ve mostly looked for is the flavor and the texture above all, and we’ve presented our experience in no particular order.
*Ed Note: we regret to inform that Anchor Strawberry Low-fat Stirred yogurt wasn’t available at any of the supermarkets, on the day we set out to get them.
Set Yogurts
Anchor Newdale – Mango Flavored Set Yogurt
*Cue ”Mango, sudu nande” advertisement to start ringing in your head till kingdom come.
If you’re emphasized on eating natural mangoes, rather than tasting the flavored kind, you might want to stay away from this one – but trust me, it’s not that bad. Presenting a good, natural-like mangoey taste, and not overly sweet or synthetic-like, it actually surprised us. In terms of texture, it wasn’t very creamy, or milky, but firmer than the rest.
Anchor Newdale, Strawberry Flavored Set Yogurt
Boasting a shiny, Katy Perry, bubblegum pink surface, this strawberry flavored yogurt doesn’t particularly taste like strawberries. It has that sourness which is generally associated with yogurts but not the fruity notes of strawberry. While we didn’t particularly love it, it wasn’t very sweet, which is a major plus point.
Kotmale Strawberry Flavored Set Yogurt
This one gave a strong kick in terms of acidity and had generous amounts of strawberry bits embedded into the yogurt. Unfortunately, the sour notes of the yogurt were quite overpowering, but the tiny bits of fruit helped to keep things interesting. It is quite sweet – more like an artificial sweetness, and not the natural kind.
Stirred Yogurts
Kotmale Mixed Berries Stirred Yogurt
With actual pieces of berries blended in, the Kotmale Mixed Berry yogurt was creamy, sour and had a tiny swirl of sweetness seeping through. While it doesn’t necessarily taste like a mix of berries, it had a hint of cherries, which is quite weird. Followed by an acidic aftertaste which made the whole process very much more interesting, we liked this.
Kotmale Vanilla Flavoured Stirred Yogurt
Super creamy in texture, with hints of vanilla, which seemed to disappear along with the process of eating it, Kotmale Vanilla Flavored Stirred yogurt was quite alright. Like the Mixed Berry yogurt, this too had a good tartness to it which kind of stings the back of your throat when you eat it.
Overall, we say go with normal yogurt instead of buying this, as the set yogurt is much cheaper, and the taste is pretty much the same.
Rich Life Mixed Berry, Low-Fat Yogurt
Sweet, tangy and absolutely fruity, this one was a delight. It had loads of berry pieces in every spoonful and the color of it was so, so pretty. It is, in fact, quite tart, and it was more of a natural one. Plus, it feels less acidic than the others we tried and doesn’t wage war with the back of your throat as the others did.
Oh yeah, it smells really nice too!
Anchor Mixed Berry Low-Fat Yogurt
Anchor’s Low-Fat Stirred yogurt comes in two flavors – Mixed Berry and Strawberry. Unfortunately, the Strawberry flavored one wasn’t available on any of the supermarkets on the day we set out to get them.
Anyway, the Mixed Berry flavored one like a less fruity version of Rich Life, but still quite good. With a sharp kick to the back of your throat before receding down your esophagus, it was delicious, and a lot smoother than the Rich Life because the berry pieces are of a much smaller size.
Conclusion
In conclusion, all we can say is, don’t eat all of this in one sitting. My tongue feels like it’s coated in acidic yogurt bacteria.
We would also like to congratulate Rich Life for making really nice, not so expensive (in yogurt standards) mixed berry yogurt. It is truly one of the finer things in life, and our favorite out of the lot.
