Kalpitiya is one of the best places on the island to relax and watch the sunset. It’s a 4.5 hour journey from Colombo if you take the bus.
Kalpitiya is great because – especially during off-season and anyway in general – its beaches are generally not as crowded as other coastal holiday spots, and sometimes you’ll find long, clean stretches of sand that are absolutely deserted. So it’s great for privacy and there is plenty of shore. [Editors Note: The Kalpitiya beach is actually not great for swimming, but it is great for gazing]
There’s also the Kalpitiya and Puttalam lagoons, which personally makes a better location to watch the sunset because the water here is serene and affords a clear uninterrupted horizon and sky.
