Ah October! The month where beer and bockwurst take center stage. For a country that doesn’t share much history with Germany, we sure know how to celebrate Oktoberfest in style.
It’s a brilliant way to experience German culture, have fun with friends, and of course, enjoy copious amounts of booze. So where’s it happening at you ask? Here’s a round-up.
Oktoberfest 2014 – Mount Lavinia Hotel
Date: 7th October – 12th October
Address: Mount Lavinia Hotel, Hotel Road, Mount Lavinia
Time: 6.00 pm onwards
Costs: Rs. 5000 (VIP), Rs. 2500, Rs. 3000, Rs. 500 (Entrance only)
Mount Lavinia Hotel is hosting a “”tropicalized”” Oktoberfest on the beach this time around. Gobble authentic Bavarian cuisine cooked up by Chef Andreas Pflugmacher and play traditional Oktoberfest games with some of the Bavarian fillies who have flown down for the Oktoberfest at Mt. Lavinia Hotel. Seems like a great place to end the week judging by the photos from their first night of celebrations.
The Sovereign German Restaurant
Date: 4th October – 19th October
Address: 157, Nawala Road, Nugegoda
Time: 7.00pm onwards
Cost: Rs. 2000 (adults), Rs. 1000 (kids)
The Sovereign German restaurant is one of two German restaurants, with the other being the Bavarian. So it’s no real surprise that they’re having their own Oktoberfest. At Rs. 2000 for the buffet and 50% off on drinks, this is the most affordable place on our list.
Poppy Hana Oktoberfest
Date: Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 2nd November
Address: Liberty Arcade, R. A. de Mel Mawatha, Colombo 3
Time: 7.00 pm – 10.00 pm
Cost: Rs. 1000 – Rs. 2000
This one will definitely be the most unique of the bunch, so if you’re looking for something different, give these guys a try. The best part is they have it right through October with special meat and seafood menu as well as special rates on imported beers. Will it be the most authentic experience, highly unlikely, but as with Poppy Hana’s theme, you can expect some interesting fusion cuisine.
The Bavarian
Date: 9th October – 12th October
Address: No. 11 Galle Face Court 2, Colombo 3
Time: 7.00 pm onwards
Cost: Rs. 2500
When you think of German food in Colombo, the first place that comes to mind is The Bavarian. This year they are bringing down guest Chef Wolfgang Gunterman (could a name be more German?) from Germany just for their Oktoberfest. If you’ve been to The Bavarian before, you know they are all about huge carnivorous portions, and we expect no less from their Oktoberfest. It’s shame though that it’s only happening for 4 days.
Oktoberfest @ The Hilton Colombo
Date: 23rd October – 1st November
Address: No. 2, Hilton, Lotus Road, Colombo
Time: 7.00 pm onwards
Cost: Rs. 2750
So wrapping up our list is Hilton’s Oktoberfest during final week of October. As with any event Hilton hosts, you can expect this to be pretty grand. They’ve been hosting an Oktoberfest every year for the past 13 years, so this year shouldn’t be any different.
