Biriyani, Masala Chai, Naan and Butter Chicken; our love for Indian food is irreplaceable. The vibrant colours, fragrant spices and the complexity of flavours are three of the many things that make Indian food so exquisite and unique.
Thanks to the rich the throng of Indian restaurants in Colombo, we've plenty of places to grab these goodies. From international franchises and high-end to medium and low-end, this collection has made sure that there's something to suit every wallet.
But, if there's one thing that we've observed over the past few years, it's how hard it is to come across a place that does every Indian food speciality right. While some are known for their delicious biriyani, a few are known for the excellent curries and rotis, while the rest have their moments.
Which is why, Saveira is an exception. It's one of those rare picks in the city that does all the Indian treats well. From biriyani to naan to chicken 65 to paneer tikka masala, it's highly unlikely that Saveira Indian Restaurant will let you down.
Located down Havelock Road right next to Royal Institute, Saveira lit up their tandoor (and other cookers) in September 2019, and it took them only a few months to become a favourite of many. With a massive menu featuring 300 or so dishes, it has pretty much everything you need to satiate your Indian food cravings. Plus, most of them are priced under Rs. 700, so it's quite handy on your wallet too!
Their Naan and Butter Chicken is the go-to dish of many, while the Mutton Biriyani is aromatic and packed with a load of spices, along with excellently prepared mutton buried within the rice. They also do a range of tandoori and kebabs that's full of flavour, and sawans too, which is probably the best way to treat your loved ones in the festive season.
All these wonders are crafted by their in-house, Indian chefs, so the authenticity of them is well-assured.
Aside from Indian food, they do an array of dishes that lean towards the Chinese and Sri Lankan aspect of things – such as Sweet and Sour Meats, Hot Butter Cuttlefish, Fried Rice, Nasi goreng, Noodles, Maccaroni and Kottu, to name a few. There's a selection of BBQ on their menu as well, and a whole bunch of sweets and desserts, to give that perfect end to your meal. Plus, do not forget to try a glass (or two) of their Faluda or Mango Juice for a refreshing kick.
You can easily grab these off from the restaurant, but if you're too lazy or within the delivery range, via PickMe Food and Uber Eats.
Saveira is a good option to throw birthday parties and host other events too. They can cater up to 150 – 200 pax in the hall, while the ample parking space on the outside makes for the hassle-free parking. Plus, they do catering for functions.
And did you know, that they're also a hotel with accommodation? There are 34 well-appointed, air-conditioned deluxe rooms for single, double and triple occupancy.
Saveira serves Indian food at its finest, made with high-quality ingredients, but they don't limit themselves just to that. They like to explore and do a bit of fusion with different cuisines around the world. So even if you're not the biggest fan of Indian food, Saveira is worth a shot, because they've got something for everyone.
