We love Bubble Queen. Located on Galle Road, this clean, cheerful little shop sells a whole variety of the Taiwanese drink, bubble tea.
We’ve written about bubble tea before. It’s a tea-based drink containing small beads of tapioca, to be chewed as the drink is slurped through a thick straw. The flavours generally falls under two categories: fruit and milk. You can have a juice or syrup based drink with flavours like apple, peach, etc or you can go au lait, with mint, coffee, chocolate and so on.
On recommendation we discovered another rather interesting flavour: taro. We don’t know much about taro except that it’s a sort of starchy root vegetable. While this may not sound great, it actually makes for a rather tasty, hearty drink. But it all depends on your feelings towards porridge. In Sri Lanka, porridge is an unpopular, nay, unheard of choice for breakfast. Personally, I love it. And the taro bubble tea is a great porridge-substitute fix in the city. Thick and starchy, the violet-hued liquid is less of a drink and more breakfast in a cup. It tastes like sweet oatmeal.
Be warned, this drink might not be for everyone. But we really like it. And if you like porridge, you might too.
