Shaze is an interesting new space which has sprung up on Thimbirigasaya Road. It is only opening officially this Friday (December 6th), so please consider this just a preview.
The Location
Shaze is located on Thimbirigasaya, opposite Glory Swim Shop and near the Fab. It's a striking building, finished in nice cut cement. We discovered it while driving by because it's quite distinct.
Shaze bills itself as a cafe, diner and boutique. As you enter you get couch seating like a cafe and there are tables at the back. There's also an outdoor seating area at the front and another courtyard at the back. They say they'll introduce a fish market of sorts there soon.
The place actually feels more like a nightclub or bar/lounge than anything else, but they don't serve alcohol. It seems like a family friendly place.
The Food
We went on literally the first day they opened so we won't get into the food much. We tried the fried prawns (Rs. 495), coriander chicken kebabs (Rs. 425) and they gave a veggie salad wrap complimentary (cause it was opening night).
The food is all quite generous. The fried prawns have a big prawn in there, plumped out with what seems to be more prawn filling. You get double the prawniness. The chicken kebabs are also quite big. We would say that the stuff is seasoned quite bluntly. It's rather heavy food.
Of course, this was on day one. The place needs to be given some time to figure out its menu, etc.
The Service
Opening night, so the owners were there and the service was excellent. They ask for feedback and seem to care. The staff is trained well – bringing an ashtray for a smoking friend, for example. The bill was a bit slow to come but that will change with time.
Conclusion
We'll reserve our conclusion for now. Shaze is very very new. Give it some time and try it out for yourself. They offer mid-range food in a nice and prominent space in Colombo 5.
