Food
The menu here revolves around Asian Fusion, Western and Sri Lankan things. However, none of the Sri Lankan dishes was available on the day we visited, so we decided to stick to the other two.
The Seafood Linguine Marinara (Rs. 1200) was a hearty portion of penne pasta (yep! we were confused too) smothered with marinara sauce, and had plenty of cuttlefish, prawns and white fish thrown in the fray. Garnished with a dash of parmesan, the pasta was cooked al dente, and they seem to make use of some good marinara. Delightfully tangy and slightly sweet, it was thick in texture, and the infusion of pepper really helped to kick things up a notch. The Butter Chicken Masala (Rs. 850) was offered alongside a serving of white rice, vegetable kuruma, and a few strips of papadam. There were around five pieces of well-cooked chicken dunked in a lusciously creamy gravy, but in terms of flavour, it didn't deliver. It looked and tasted a lot like regular chicken curry, and we couldn't quite detect the significant masala flavour, aroma nor colour here.
Drinks
Cafe UFO serves a range of cocktails, smoothies, juices and milkshakes. We opted for the Salty Dog (Rs. 800) and Chocolate Milkshake (Rs. 500).
Served in a salt-rimmed glass, the Salty Dog was a blend of Vodka and Grapefruit juice. The ripples of sweetness drawn from the grapefruit surely helped to balance out the boozy counterpart of the drink, but we do wish if they had gone easy on that. The Vodka punch here was quite mild and totally lost as you go into the bottom of the glass.
The Chocolate Milkshake leant on the milkier side and wasn't chocolaty as we'd have liked. It was quite refreshing though.
Ambience & Service
The ambience is the best part here. Featuring a whole lot of wood and bamboo craftsmanship and walls adorned with hay mats, it actually reminded us of the interior at Cafe 47.
Like we mentioned before, it's one of the busiest restaurants in the area; lots and lots of tourists seem to walk in here. If you want to grab a bite in a calm and peaceful atmosphere, this is probably not the best choice in the area, but, if it's a happening time that you're looking for alongside your meal, this is one of the top picks.
Cafe UFO's staff was helpful, friendly and efficient. Despite the whole full-house situation, they managed to bring out our food within around 15 minutes.
Conclusion
While the food and drinks at Cafe UFO could use some work, we suggest you check out Cafe UFO in your next trip to Ella, solely for its brilliant interior and ambience.
